Changing the Game played in Portugal & Pictures

A group of students snd enthusiasts in Lisbon has found together to hold a seminar discussing energy systems and Europe’s future over a session of Changing the Game. Energy Crossroads Denmark supported the event by sending game materials, including Lego bricks and game cards.

In total three sessions were held between November 2011 and February 2012. Enjoy some pictures on our Flickr page!

Game cards

Two types of game cards are used in CtG:

  • Change cards, which describe changes to the business as usual scenario
  • Capacity cards, which describe the different technologies used for power generation.

CtG quiz

A quiz has been developed in order to make sure all participants have fully understood the way Changing the Game deals with energy systems. The quiz is completed at the very beginning of part 1.

Accounting sheet

In order to keep track of the expenses related to constructing a new energy future a bookkeeper in each group write down all transactions on the accounting sheet. In the end it is possible to see how expensive the group’s scenario is compared to business as usual.

Region fact sheets

These sheets contain information on population development, energy consumption and availability of energy resources in the region. This information could be used as an input to the discussions on which energy sources to use.

Target & Results poster

A large poster is available to each group helping them to keep track of the targets they have set themselves and the results they achieve when creating their scenario for 2030. The posters also function as documentation of the groups achievements.

In-game manual day 2

Whereas the participants discuss how the future should look like and create their scenario in the first part, the second part focuses on how to make it real. The part 2 manual sets the framework for discussing how the changes can be brought about through a stakeholder and policy analysis and participants end up writing a petition for change to a relevant stakeholder.

The in-game manual guides participants step-by-step through the process of creating an energy scenario for 2030. Participants take turns reading out loud making sure everybody is following the process.
